We have all experienced it; you are in the middle of streaming your favourite show, writing your essay or finishing your online shopping … and you get the little blue circle that spins. Your only thought at this point is:
Why Is My Internet So Slow?
Location, Location, Location
When you are connected to Wi-Fi, your connection speed can be affected by both where your computer is located and whether there are other wireless devices in the same area. Wireless networks can interfere with each other, for example, your microwave frequency can interfere with your wireless laptop computers.
Recommendation: Move your wireless laptop computer closer to the access point and make sure there are no physical obstructions between the access point and your computer.
Who Are You Sharing Your Computer Space With?
Spyware and viruses can definitely cause problems, but your Internet connection speed can also be affected by add-on programs, the amount of memory the computer has, hard disk space and condition, and the programs that are running.
Two of the most frequent causes of poor internet performance are spyware and viruses. Spyware monitors your internet use and keystrokes, which causes delays. Viruses infect your computer and then install computer code which attempts to propagate itself.
There is also the browser add-ons which are programs such as multimedia add-ons, search bars, or other programs that appear on your browser’s toolbar. They make your browsing experience amazing, but they aren’t so great when they stay after you have left the website.
Recommendation: You should regularly run an antispyware program to clean out any spyware infestation and viruses. You can remove and manage browser add-ons through your extensions tab.
External Forces
Location of your computer has been confirmed and it’s good, you have no spyware, viruses or browser add-ons, but still you are muttering why is my internet so slow? Review what is going on around you. Local internet congestion can result in slower-than-normal connection speeds. These slowdowns occur when too many people try to connect to the Internet at the same time, and they occur most often at peak activity times, such as after school hours when students get home and connect to the web or when everyone gets home from work.
Recommendation: Chat with Gareth, owner of Burnt Orange Solutions, and see what he recommends. His recommendations may prevent you from muttering under your breath… Why is my internet so slow?
